“Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.” – Jim Davis
If you need your body and mind to function well, you need to feed it well.
Why?
You can’t get very far into your day without hearing or seeing some message relating to your body. The ladies amongst us will have a tendency to feel especially got at with images of the ‘perfect’ look. Given that this perfection is achieved by way of the air brush, many of the messages thrown at you today will be clap trap.
Aim for the magazine industry’s definition of perfection and you’ve got a long way to fall! Aim to give your body the energy it needs to function in a packaging that it finds easy to open and you’re on to a winner.
What?
Feed your body in such a way that it will have lots of energy to allow your brain to function effectively. Where possible, choose foods as close to their natural packaging as possible. Your body will have an easier time opening this than when your food is wrapped up in long words that you can’t even read
How?
Do you have breakfast? If not, start right there. Despite what it has gotten used to, your body really does need more than a cup of coffee to get going first thing. If you leave the house very early, pack a banana. It might not be the ultimate balanced diet but it’s better than coffee and cake at 11am
Introduce small changes each day that together will make a huge difference to your body and mind. Everybody is unique so a definitive list of changes is not helpful but here’s a few to get you thinking:
- have a piece of fruit mid-morning.
- take a water bottle to work (and use it
) - purpose to have one glass of water for every mug of tea or coffee that you drink.
- if you’re craving a massive slice of delicious cake, have a glass of water first and then decide if you really want it.
- have a little something of what you enjoy.
Now it’s your turn. What small changes can you make that will make a difference?

Eleanor, your post reminds me of “Donkey” from the movie Shrek. I don’t know why, but I guess it has something to do with the carrot as the “carrot on a stick” idiom where you derived the title makes use of a boy dangling a carrot in front of a donkey to make it move. Ok, so maybe that’s exactly the reason why. lol
[[ Now it’s your turn. What small changes can you make that will make a difference? ]] – Hmm… answering this question is actually harder than I thought. Let me see… right now I’ve been saying to myself “MOVE IT” whenever I notice that I’m about to slack off. Seems to be working pretty well… for now. =)

Hi Ryhen,
‘Move it’ sounds like a good message to give yourself every once in a while. I personally could do with some ‘move it’ as I aim to get the pre-writing challenge complete

I am in this predicament right now with what I eat and drink. Even though I have a metabolism that could win an Olympic gold metal, my intake of unhealthy foods/soda have taken it’s tole on my energy levels. I find myself more tired everyday. So now what I do is only drink soda during meal times and in between only water. What I eat is really not my decision so much since it is at the mercy of our cooks on board my boat. Other than that I have really been noticing more energy now.

Sounds very wise Ryan. I hadn’t appreciated that you are at sea a lot of the time. Daft question then I assume but do you get web access from the boat in order to keep your blog up to date? If so, what do your fellow sailors think of your blogging?

Eleanor,
Bananas are ever so tasty and a great sources of goodness, or so my mum said.
A great post with lots of useful dietry tips to follow. I’m aware I must lose some weight and I do have a reasonably health diet, however due to my love for all food, I tend to eat some of the wrong stuff from time to time.
Regards
Paul

I agree with your mum Paul, bananas are great. I just meant that they’re not balanced in the sense of containing carbs and protein. Eating the ‘wrong stuff’ from time to time is only natural. I love the ‘wrong stuff’ too and find that the key for me is moderation. I can have a biscuit with a cup of tea but do I really need to have another three?
