1 Minute Motivator: Do the small things

“Do the small things.” – Dewi Sant / Saint David

Why? Do you want to change the world? That’s a pretty big aspiration but it’s said that the best way to change the world is to do it one small step at a time. Every year in the lead up to Saint David’s day, school children in Wales learn about the wonderful things that the patron saint did in his lifetime. His small things added up to make a massive difference to those around him.

But doing the small things can also be applied to your business life. Thinking about your dreams and aspirations, what are the small things that you can do right now that together will add up to make a difference and move your goals forward?

What? Every day, make it your purpose to do the small things that you see can be done. Do the small things at home and your family life will be happier. Do the small things in your business and it too will thank you. Do the small things as you encounter other people along the journey and one day you’ll wake up to a changed world.

How? Keep your eyes open during the day for small opportunities to make a difference. If you continue through you day wearing blinkers, you’ll miss it. If you rush through the day without taking time to stop, how are you going to see the difference you could make? Enjoy doing the small things and the rest will take care of itself.

    Eleanor,

I need to be coming to your blog, for these I minute motivators, at the beginning of the day rather than the end. I’ll try to get it on to my must do list.

Thanks for sharing a simple but powerful message.

    Regards

    Paul

Glad you found it helpful Paul but don’t worry about adding to your list, just pop by when you remember. I suspect your to-do list is full and bursting already ;)

There’s a saying in retail that retail is detail. ie the small things make the biggest difference. When you’re surrounded with so much ‘sameness’ doing the small things can make you stand out and will make a significant difference to your business and make your life more fulfilling also.

Thanks Matthew, I like that :)

A business example is that this brings to mind is that of my mum. She has a catering business where she prepares the food at transports it to the venue. Much of her work is in the post graduate departments of hospitals but she also caters for meetings in kidney clinics, dentists and sexual health!

Her small detail is table cloths and matching napkins. In the environment that she works, her customers had got used to bare tables and boring white napkins. Using table cloths was her ‘thing’ that made her stand out from the competition. Aside from the great food of course ;)
