“Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome” – Samuel Johnson
Why?
When I have enough money in the bank, I’ll start my new business venture. When my children are grown-up, I’ll go to college and take my exams. When I’m feeling more content in my head, I’ll start that awesome new diet! Pure fiction it might be but you know that in your own way, you do this. Maybe you set yourself conditions which must be met before proceeding. Or do you have an idea but won’t action it until you have checked with all your family members and friends?
If you know you struggle with making a start, today’s one minute motivator is certainly for you. If you’re awesome at making excuses, this is also for you. You have been warned
What?
The simple answer is to stop! Stop making excuses. Stop setting criteria that must be met. Decide what you want to do one day and do it now instead. If you need some practical ‘how-to’ advice, remember to read the final paragraph.
How?
If you’re a a serial procrastinator, take a little time to work out why. What’s really stopping you from starting a family, opening your own business, taking your dream holiday or quitting your job to care for your children? We’ve talked before about the importance of starting and how to choose short term achievable goals. Feel free to go back and refresh your memory but don’t take too long about it
All done? Great, now get out of here and put those steps in place. Make a start right now!

Eleanor,
The only thing stopping me doing and achieving anything is the obstacle inside my own head. My first task before starting out is to ‘beat it’ then get moving with what I have to do. It’s working okay so far.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and such a great 1 minute motivator.
Regards
Paul

Hi Eleanor,
I think that we are masters at making excuses for ourselves. Even when we want to do something, we’ll come up with a perfectly logical excuse not to do it. The trick is to overcome this resistence and to do it anyways. Conditions will never be perfect – so you might as well do it now when you have the time. No one knows what the future will bring and you may lose the amazing opportunity for change today.

Thanks Karen. You’re so right. It reminds me of that favourite quote of mine from Kung Foo Panda about today being a gift. I know that if I fully embraced that truth each day I would enjoy each day much more and certainly get a lot more done too
Hey, you just summed up 75% of my clients.
Sometimes there are genuine reasons. I want a beach house in Monterrey, Ca, but I need a few million to buy that
We spent 5 years trying to work out when moving to the US was right. Then we realized it was now otherwise we’d never do it. That was 4 years ago and delighted we got our act together.
It’s sad that some people never make the move, but such is life I guess.

Would it be fair to say that without this procrastination, a percentage of your 75% wouldn’t be your clients? If so, then for no good reason other than to keep you in bread and jam, it’s probably great that not everyone takes action as they should.
It’s like when a couple talk about starting a family. We personally decided that there was no perfect time so since we were both keen, we might as well crack on with it. So we did and seven years later, our lives are chaos
