1 Minute Motivator: Dream Big

As a child, did you ever hear a grown-up tell you to stop day dreaming and concentrate? What did your dad say when you told him you wanted to be an space explorer? How often did you hear the word ‘no’? Life is about balance. Children need to hear ‘no’ at times but they also need room to dream and explore. Can you imagine the reaction if a school teacher scolded a child for dreaming of being a world class football player?

At what point do we lose that child-like capacity to dream big dreams? Why is it not cool to squash a child’s boundless energy and enthusiasm and yet we tell the grown-ups around us to live in the real world? What child ever dreamt of becoming an investment banker? And yet, why are there so few deep sea divers?

Today, you are going to do a little day dreaming. We’re not goal setting or writing a to-do list. You’re just going to let your mind wander and think about the biggest, most exciting, most unrealistic desires of your heart. If you could do anything right now, what would it be? If money were no object, where would you love to be a month from now? How about 12 months?

Enjoy living the dream, albeit in your head, savour it, taste it. Now think, is there anything that you can do today that will make this dream just a tiny bit more possible? That might take a bit more than a minute so feel free to save it for later ;) But if there is something that you can do, what would Mr Nike say? “Just Do It!”

Over to you. What are your dreams? What can you do to help realise them?
