“If you can’t ride two horses at once, you shouldn’t be in the circus!” – American proverb
If God had wanted you to do two things at once, He’d have given you two pairs of hands
Why? Is your life feeling like a bit of a circus today? It’s been said that men can’t multitask at all but if the state of my children’s packed lunch when I make their food at the same time as check my email is anything to go by, we ladies can’t talk
Whilst some multitasking is inevitable (you’re reading this at the same time as breathing aren’t you?) it is generally well accepted that things get done more quickly and efficiently when we do just one thing at a time. It’s better for our stress levels too
What? Do just one thing very well and give it your 100% attention.
How? Choose first what it is that you are going to do. It might be a business task you’ve been putting off but seeing as it’s the weekend, maybe you’d just prefer to focus on having a great time with your family? Whatever ‘it’ is, purpose to do it and it alone for the designated time scale. Remove, unplug or turn off all other distractions. Be in the moment with ‘it’ right now.

Eleanor,
A timely reminder about taking on too much at once; these I minute motivators are become very much part of my daily routine.
I love the quote about God and two pairs of hands.

Paul

Thanks for your encouragement Paul. I’m really glad to hear you’re finding these 1mm useful. If it’s any help, I’m enjoying writing them too

Hi Ayo,
It’s been a crazy time here, I feel like I’ve been saying that for something like a fortnight now. I blame Carlos and his pre-writing challenge. I seem to spend every spare half-second writing which leaves little room for visiting my friends
I’ll be back round your place very soon though. Just need to prioritize right now so I don’t fail the first ever pre-writing challenge
Great to see you. I’m very well. It’s kind of you to always ask

Hi Eleanor,
I agree that devoting 100% to one task can definitely decrease your stress level, but it’s so hard sometimes! Especially, when you only have a limited amount of time and your to-do list is so long. Just this morning, I was doing my laundry at the same time as putting away the dishes from the dishwasher, making lunch, burning a DVD and watching a TV show. All while trying to cross things off my task list for the day. It’s mid-afternoon here and I feel like I hardly have gotten anything done today. Guess I should slow down, take some unecessary things off the to-do list and just be happy with that I do get done today. After all, tomorrow is another day

Sounds like you’ve been very busy Karen. I can totally relate to the multi-tasking. I’m stood in the kitchen typing this at the same time as having some breakfast
But you’re right, we do need to slow down and give ourselves a breather sometimes. I had to do that last night. I was in bed by half nine after falling asleep on the sofa some 40 minutes previously! There’s only so much we can do.
I liked something that Tim Ferris suggested in his 4 hour work week. He said to choose one or two tasks that if you got them finished, would ensure you were satisfied with your day, and then aim to get them done by 11am. I’m paraphrasing but it ties in with what you said about taking unnecessary things off the to-do list.
Welcome to a brand new day
