“Young men think old men are fools; but old men know young men are fools.” – George Chapman
I know you think you know best and I’m sure you’re probably right but why not let someone else have a turn today?
Why?
Despite what we like to think, we haven’t got all the answers. Talking to someone whose opinion we trust and respect can be of enormous value, both in our personal lives and in business. Talking and listening allows you to share your concerns and get advice. It also enables you to get another’s perspective on your issue.
What?
Find some lovely, kind people who you can talk to. Despite the post title, they don’t have to be older than you but don’t neglect the wisdom of the older generation. Don’t discount something just because the message bearer has silver locks
How?
Look at your network. Are there folks you already have contact with who are a little older and wiser than you? If so, start there. Your own parents are also a great source of wisdom. Despite high school training to the contrary, they can be good to talk to. If you’ve spent a long time resisting talking to anyone about things that bother you, you will need to go at this gently. Just give it a go and you might be surprised at the result

You need to surround yourself with people you trust so that they can help you think things through. A word of caution about your elders though and that is that they were brought up in a different time and moulded by different experiences. For example when I left employment to become self employed my mum didn’t tell anyone. But when I got my first assignment with BT in London she told everyone. She still thinks that I’m doing contract work until I find ‘a proper’ job.

A very good point, thank you Matthew
It’s great to get advice but sometimes you have to listen, take on board what they say and then have the courage of your convictions and go your own way

Eleanor,
A subtle reminder about how we must consider the older generation and show them the respect they deserve. They have so much to offer us with their experiences and knowledge of life. As Matthew say an element of caution is required because of the generation differences but this doesn’t detract from the their wealth of expertise in other areas.

Paul

Or you could talk to James and let him kick your but into line.

Maybe. James is good at kicking one’s behind but sometimes it still takes an extra set of ears
