6 Ways to Give to Your Favourite Charity For Free

Image for 6 Ways to Give

Whatever your favourite charity or not-for-profit organisation, there are some easy ways you can give for free. The only thing it will take is a few second of your time. Priceless ;)

The Giving Machine
We love The Giving Machine! Set it as your home page (or even better, one of your home page tabs ;) ) and every time you shop online, for the time it takes to do one simple click, you’ll have donated a percentage of whatever you spend to your favourite good cause. What’s very cool about The Giving Machine is you can support up to four good causes. Great if, like me, you’re rubbish at choosing just one ;) If you need a step by step ‘how to’ for The Giving Machine, it’s available right here. Just ignore the fact that it’s talking about Christmas shopping. The Giving Machine is for life, not just for Christmas ;)

Gift Aid
If you live in the UK and pay tax, you need to know about Gift Aid. In my humble opinion, it’s one of the best inventions HMRC ever gave us. We all think we give far too much of our hard earned money away to the tax man don’t we? Well Gift Aid is one way we can take a little back. Admittedly, you can’t get it back for yourself (although if you do a tax return, the money you give to charity is tax deductible ;) ) but you can give it to a good cause. The technicalities of how it work are well documented elsewhere on the site so I won’t waste time repeating myself. I just wanted to remind you that it’s an easy way you can give even more without it costing you a penny. It’s very simple, just tick the box ;)

EveryClick
Whilst Google seem to have the market cornered when it comes to search engines, there is a very good reason for trying one of their competitors. Powered by Yahoo, Every Click donates 1p to your chosen good cause, every time you do a search via them. Add it as a home page tab (next to The Giving Machine ;) ) and you’ll never forget to use it. They’ve recently added an EBay and news feed to the search results to allow you to get even more information from your single click. But don’t take my word for it. Why not try a quick search now?

See, that was easy wasn’t it? And you just gave 1p to Give A Brick. How cool is that?!

eBay
Have you heard about the Charity programme available via eBay? If not, you should check it out. Buyers, it allows you to quickly, easily and safely give a donation (ranging from 10% to 100% of the selling price) to your favourite charity and sellers, you can buy you favourite bargains, safe in the knowledge that by doing so, you’re making a difference. eBay are also listed on The Giving Machine so go via there and you’ll be giving even more at no cost to you.

Click to Give
If you haven’t already done so, you have got to check out the range of ‘Click to Give’ websites. Personally, I have The Breast Cancer site on another tab on my home page. Every time I open my browser, I click on the big button and it helps fund mammograms. If you can spare another few seconds, you can also click on the other five tabs, ranging from The Hunger Site (I just clicked and gave 1.1 cups of food to a hungry person) through to Literacy Programs and Child Health. Whatever you favoured area, one of these six options is almost certain to float your boat.

Recycling
Whether it be stamps, old mobile phones or printer cartridges, your charity can get cash for them. There’s no easy online way to do this right now (although if I’m wrong and there is, please tell us :) ) but start collecting these things today and then contact your charity and ask them if they currently do this. If they don’t and would like to know, by all means send them to us and we’ll tell them how we do it. Alternatively, if you’d like to recycle these items on behalf of Give A Brick, get in touch and we can talk.

To that end, if you’re a school, college or business in the South or West Wales area and would like us to collect these items from you, we’d love to talk to you. We’re starting a collection programme later in the year and are currently working out the best routes to take.

Over to you. What small things could you add to your day that would make a massive difference?
Please add a comment and retweet.
It’s just another one of the ways you can Give A Brick and then tell your friends

I love the line, “The giving machine is for life, not just for Christmas.”

Cheers. Can’t say that one was completely original. Blame it on the dogs ;)

By the way, if you add ‘GiveABrick.com’ as your website URL, the Comment Luv plugin would kick in and you could click the red arrow to select your blog posts. Just an idea :)

    Eleanor,

What a great post. Particularly in the economic times it reminds us that we don’t just have to give money in order to give to charity. Searching and recyling can all add thier bit.

    Good luck!

      Thanks Matthew.
It’s amazing really how quickly these little things add up, especially when we get more people using them. The trick is to find easy ways to remember to use them. That’s why I love the introduction of tabbed home pages. I have such a bad memory, I’d forget otherwise ;)

    Hi Eleanor!

On facebook there is a game called “Owned” where you buy and sell people’s facebook pics, from within that game you can go to another section called “Save The Planet” where you can use the virtual cash you’ve made buying and selling your friends to make real donations to real charities.

    Just ‘nother idea to give.

      Hi Steve,
Thanks for stopping by. I’ve not heard of that. Sounds like another excellent way to give for free. I like ;)

Hi Eleanor, thanks for listing all these methods. Speaking for myself, I always look out when buying on ebay for the charity symbol, and I think others do as well. Thanks again, Nikki
