Backups

Hi,

This post is totally unrelated to Give A Brick as a charity and all that we’re doing to ask everyone to give A brick (i.e. just 1) however, just this morning I learned the huge value of having a back-up of one’s site. I’m trying to tinker with the code so that a little picture of the person who wrote a post shows up. This I have done (with much help ;) ) However, at the moment, if you click on any one of our pages listed at the top left of the site, these too show author pictures.

In many cases this would be my picture. Given that these pages are ‘contact us’ and ‘about us’ you can understand why I don’t want or need my smiling face up there ;)

Anyway, I was given some code to try which didn’t quite do it so I was having a fiddle in some far off php file and totally knocked out the entire site. I’m amazed how easily one can kill a website with just twenty or so characters! Until yesterday, I was one who was hopeless at backing up things but thankfully just yesterday there was a WordPress update which needed doing and, just for once, I followed their advice and did a back up before updating :D

The update was fine, no need to revert to back up but when I crippled the site this morning my backup did mean I could just upload the unbroken, untinkered with php file and within seconds, all was well again!

So if you don’t already, I would urge you to have a copy of your site somewhere safe, just in case. This is particularly true if, like me, you’re self taught and learn most of your ‘stuff’ on here by trial and error ;)

Have a great day,

Love El x
