You need to begin your job hunt but so far you have mainly been studying at school, college or university. You have no or little work experience so what are you going to put on your CV to impress employers?

Your CV is the document that will get you an interview along with the covering letter so it is worth spending time to get across your strengths and skills and what you can bring to an employer so your CV stands out from the crowd.

Skills and Abilities

You have lots of skills and abilities. Think through the things you have done to help identify them.

1. Did you win any awards or certificates for achievement in any of the subjects you studied?
2. Did you belong to any clubs or societies? What were your responsibilities and achievements?
3. Were you a prefect, a mentor, a buddy? It doesn’t matter if a lot of people did these roles, what is important is what you brought to the role.
4. Did you do any sports? Were you a dedicated member of the team. Did you have any special responsibilities?
5. Have you ever brought a group of people together to achieve something, in a youth group, sports group or interest group.
6. What are your computing skills? Good typing skills, understanding of search engines and social media can all be useful assets as well as advanced spreadsheet and database skills
7. What are your hobbies. What skills and interests do they show?
8. What activitie have you been involved in that shows commitment, team work and leadership.

Remember companies receive hundred of CVs, so yours needs to show more than just your academic achievements. You need to project your personality, capacity for hard work and desire to learn.

Work Experience

Make the most of any work experience you have

1. If you did a boring routine job very different from the one you are applying for, was there a time when you showed initiative in the task, helped another person, had foresight to react to something.
2. Was your time keeping and commitment great?
3. Was there any incident that showed your skills?
4. Did you babysit regularly (baby sitting is a very responsible job)
5. Did you demonstrate excellent customer service skills?

Volunteer work

Volunteering can be a great way to gain experience so while you are job hunting, look for some volunteer work. Go to your local Volunteer Bureau or look on the website www.i-volunteer.org.uk

3. Did you work as part of a team, take responsibility?

Top tips

1. Do not include your date of birth or your marital status. Both these are irrelevant to your application and can be good information for anyone wishing to steal your identity.
2. Put some short key words / sentences that briefly profile your skills and experience – then ensure all these are further covered in more detail under your education, work experience, volunteering or hobbies and interests
3. Most employers glance at a CV for a few seconds to seek key facts that interest them. A profile should attract their attention to make them want to read the CV in more depth.
4. It is vitally important that there are no spelling or grammar errors on your CV. Do get someone to proof read it for you.

Covering Letter

Your CV may be going out to many potential employers. A covering letter can draw particular attention to the skills and attributes which relate to the job specification and person specification for the specific job that you are applying for. It is always wise to include a covering letter as it also shows you have taken time and trouble to find out more about the company and the job

Final comment

Looking for a job is hard work and time consuming. You may need to apply for many jobs before you find the one for you. But your hard work will pay off when you get that job!

Would you like to invent a device that magically zaps into the memory of your child, everything that you need them to know? Sounds like a instant hit but in reality, such a contraption would be scary. However, if such a thing were invented, what messages would you zap into your child’s brain and why? Allow me to get you started with a few suggestions …

I love you

It’s said that actions speak louder than words and this is one message a child needs to hear through actions as well as verbally.

‘Actions’ does not mean buying. The majority of children have enough stuff to stock a small department store. Small gestures such as a hug for no particular reason, ruffling their hair, holding their hand when they tell you their latest exciting adventure. Some children are naturally more vivacious. But even the children who apparently don’t like the fuss need to know they are loved. If your child is more reserved by nature, find more subtle, gentle ways to let them know that you love them unconditionally.

I like you

Does that seem like a strange suggestion to include? If you have siblings, think back to when you were little. Did you really love them or just love them because you had to because they were your brother or sister? The same is true as parents. We love our children. It’s our deepest instinct but sometimes, when they’re trying our patience, it can be harder to like them. Your child needs to know that you like them for who they are, just the way they are. It’s one of the greatest messages they can hear from you.

I hear you

Growing up in a family of six children, I learned how to ensure I got heard: I spoke fast. My sister talked fast and loud, even more effective Seriously though, all children need to be listened to and more than that, to know that they are being listened to. Even the most quiet child has something to contribute and too often it is the quiet children who don’t get heard. How many times would you try to speak and get interrupted or spoken over before giving up?

I’m sorry

This is a big one. It’s also the hardest to action. Despite what we might like to think, we grown-ups do not have all the answers. We get it wrong sometimes. When you mess up the best thing you can do is to say sorry. I wouldn’t like to get angry and cross so often that I’m apologising for losing my temper on a daily basis (I try very hard not to shout ) but when you foul up, saying sorry teaches your children a very valuable lesson. They learn that it’s OK to make mistakes. They also learn that it’s best to be honest. They also learn that sometimes emotions get the better of us. You can’t teach these things from a book. You are your child’s textbook for life.

Number Five

What do you believe is the most important lesson you can teach your child? I couldn’t find a fifth and no-one publishes a list of four so I’m afraid it’s over to you

Picture the scene if you will: kettle on, tea bag, one dunkable biscuit. It’s a beautiful morning, the birds are singing happily but drowned out just ever so slightly by the noise of three children bickering. Judging by the conversation, I suspect the youngest is protesting because his big sister is attempting to bury his favourite car in the sand pit. As I listen to them squabble, the natural instinct is to head out there and intervene. Tears and tantrums are never fun so stepping in quickly would be good as it should alleviate both.

Taking another sip of tea, I continue to listen. The noise has died down so I steal a quick glance in their direction. Whatever confrontation caused the initial outburst has since disappeared and peace has descended once more. This is not the first time I’ve had course to re-evaluate my parenting techniques and I’ve come to the conclusion that we do our children a favour when we keep out of their way.

The art of negotiation

What the parent of siblings will call quarreling, the business person calls negotiation. How do the best negotiators learn their art? It would be difficult to test this theory but wouldn’t it be interesting to find that our greatest business negotiation teams are headed up by the folks with lots of brothers and sisters? If we stop our children from quarreling, we rob them of the opportunity to develop this much valued skill.

Learn to compromise

Going hand in hand with great negotiation skills, we need our business brains to know how to compromise. Similarly, having the ability to compromise bodes well for relationships at home. What better place and time to practice this skill than in the battleground of sibling rivalry? Knowing this, why would any parent want to wade in unnecessarily?

Develop imagination and creativity

Just before Christmas last year, my eldest two went on a school trip to a miniature village set up to look like the homes of TV characters from a programme they follow in school. They had a fabulous time looking round the houses and meeting some of the characters. One in particular struck a chord with my youngest and for days afterwards, I would hear her and her sister playing pretend. On one occasion they borrowed their dad’s video recorder and filmed each other. Watching the video back,I saw a side to my youngest daughter that I have literally never seen before!

Grown-ups cramp children’s style. They need space to play safely but with freedom. They also need the opportunity to be creative without the fear of mum or dad stepping in and correcting them. Drink tea in the kitchen is good for your children’s creativity.

Great at fixing things

Ultimately, the thing I have learned is that given the opportunity, our children will usually sort out disagreements all by themselves. Allowed to do so from an early age and this becomes a skill that they can build on as they get older. Siblings being given the space to resolve arguments for themselves at the age of 10 are going to struggle if this is the first time they’ve ever done so. Had they practiced this from a younger age, it would be easier by now

There was an interesting filler piece in Saturday’s paper about the poor effect to your health small talk can bring. It cited scientific research that showed the value of deep, meaningful conversations, a future blog post all of its own. But I digress. Reflecting on the importance of solid relationships and folks to talk to and with, it tickled me somewhat to watch a lone ranger today join a team. Regular readers will remember the conversation I had with a journalist last week about Howard Stapleton’s Mosquito device. For the last three years he has been something of a lone ranger as he tried to get legislation introduced to ensure the device is used fairly and properly.

Tonight Howard appeared on ITV Wales after being interviewed today by the lady I met last week. For a limited time, you can watch his appearance on the ITV Wales website. He did a great job Personally, I was disappointed that the programme did not have the scope to discuss the unfairness of the way the device is used currently but the Downing Street website petition was mentioned (if you’re very observant you’ll even see my name on the list of current signatories )

Originally, it was hoped that Give A Brick could appear on the programme to offer support for the petition. As a charity working with young people, I personally feel it is very important that we raise our heads and our voices when something needs to be said. To that end, if anyone reading this is a PR expert and would like to teach me how  a charity can issue a meaningful press statement, I’d love to hear from you Unfortunately, the entire piece was less than two minutes long so I can understand why it was felt there was not enough time to include us.

However, as I watched the piece today, I did so with a certain sense of warm satisfaction. We made a difference today. Only time will tell how this particular story will play out but whatever happens, we worked as part of a team and we helped. We turned a former lone ranger (albeit a reluctant one) into a man who was finally heard.

Every March, children up and down the UK dress up as their favourite character from a book. They might have the opportunity to hear extra stories at home time and whatever else happens, they will definitely come home with a World Book Day Token. This token is worth £1 and allows a child to get one from a selection of books free. However, if they prefer, children can use their £1 to put toward another book.

Aside from the mermaid costume my daughter is wearing tomorrow, what fascinated me was the history of the day:

The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 80 years ago.

According to the World Book Day website, the rest of the world celebrates World Book Day next month, on St George’s Day (April 23rd) and yet we here in the UK and Ireland always seem to have it on the first Thursday in March. The argument for this is that the early date assures that schools will be open to celebrate the day. If we have a very late Easter, St George’s Day can fall in the holidays and World Book Day would not be celebrated in schools. This is something they are very keen to avoid.

A side effect of World Book Day is money raised for good causes. Specifically, two different initiatives are supported as a result.

Every year, Book Aid International sends 500,000 books to 12 different countries in . The books are sent to sub-Saharan Africa and Palestine and end up in community, public and academic libraries. Last year’s World Book Day fund-raising in schools raised £54,000 which in turn bought 27,000 books.

The other fund-raising initiative is known as the Readathon, the UK’s National Sponsored Reading Event. Since it’s formation over twenty years ago, Readathon has raised a staggering £22,000,000 for its two charities: CLIC Sargent and The Roald Dahl Foundation.

Earlier last month I learned of a device that targets people under the age of 25. With three children all falling into this age group, its indiscriminate nature bothered me. I emailed Home Secretary Alan Johnson, no joy. I asked my MP to ask Mr Johnson to speak to the inventor of the device, nothing. Getting in contact with the inventor directly brought more joy.

Howard Stapleton seems like a lovely man. Inventing the device after his daughter experienced problems shopping, Howard has been trying to get legislation for the device ever since. He has described the experience as akin to banging his head against the proverbial brick wall

Rather than taking umbrage at my calling his device a weapon (I think I had my tabloid journalist head on the day I wrote that title ) Howard has kept in contact over the last few weeks as he’s met with MP Natasha Engel. She has promised to make an appointment to meet with the Home Secretary but in the meantime, a petition has been set up calling for the legislative use of The Mosquito.

As outraged as I was at the device, it is not going to go away. Therefore, it is far more important that we get behind Howard as he attempts to work with the powers that be to ensure this device is used safely and fairly.

The petition is open to all UK residents as well as expatriates and people in the Armed Forces.

If you don’t live in the UK, you can still help. There are reported to be over 5 million people in the UK using Twitter. I don’t personally know them all but by using the principle upon which Give A Brick is built (Give A Brick and then tell your friends) we can have a pretty good shot at getting this petition in front of lots of pairs of eye balls. Given the youngish demographic of the people who tweet in the UK (under 35) and the fact that The Mosquito is targeted at the under 25 age group, I suppose this makes our chances of success even greater.

There’s a weapon in wide circulation today that works on anyone under the age of 25. It’s called The Mosquito. Four years after its invention, debate still surrounds the use of The Mosquito. This £500 device emits a sound totally inaudible to anyone over the age of 25 and has been used to discourage young people from congregating in groups.

Last Monday, the Home Secretary was asked to ban the devise (he refused) and 16 year old Andrew Deans is preparing a motion to go before the Scottish Youth Parliament calling for The Mosquito to be banned.

Having read a little about its conception, I find it quite ironic that the device was invented after a man’s teenage daughter was unable to enter a shop owing to a large crowd of young people outside. Why anyone would invent something that could potentially be used against his own child is beyond me.

Reduces crime?

There is much support for the device from people who have personally experienced the threatening feeling of large crowds of youngsters. Back in 2006, one shop keeper reported a 84% reduction in calls to the local police after installing a device.

Indiscriminate

However, the device is indiscriminate. It does not know if the young person in ear shot is being unruly. It does not know if the young person is in fact only 2 years old. Howard Stapleton, the inventor of The Mosquito, is reported to have said, “As a father I realise the majority of young people are fun-loving and law abiding.” That being the case, I can not help but wonder why we are targeting the majority. If the comment left in his name is genuine, it appears that Mr Stapleton shares my concerns. Writing in response to Andrew Dean’s motion before the Scottish Youth Parliament, he said,

“Since I launched the Mosquito I have campaigned for legislation to ensure its fair and correct use but to no avail…My device has been proven to transform lives but I acknowledge that they are sometimes misused. This is why I have developed the remote controlled system that would allow the Police to make the decision if the use of the Mosquito was justified. To do any of this I need the support of ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers). With their support I will remove the Mosquito from Public sale for use in a public areas unless permission for use has been granted by the authorities.”

Frustration

As a parent of three children under the age of 25, I am very unhappy to think that taking them shopping could potentially cause them discomfort should we enter a shop with The Mosquito installed. Having read Mr Stapleton’s comments above, coupled with the Home Secretary’s assertion that they should be used, but that “they have to be used carefully” I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated.

If someone were to install a device that caused discomfort to all dog walkers in an attempt to reduce dog fouling, there would be public outcry. Suggestions that devices aimed at the elderly be installed to reduce the number of car accidents caused by older, slower drivers would be met with disdain.

And yet for the last four years, we have been using such a devise on the ears of everyone under the age of 25, regardless of their age or behaviour. It doesn’t seem right. The inventor agrees (and has invented a solution.) The home secretary agrees. Why haven’t these two gentleman had a conversation?!

Disrespectful and unkind

It feels like proof, once again, that we would rather invest our time and energy into herding young people into a straight jacket, until such time as they pass through adolescence and enter adulthood. Having done so, they’ll spend the next 40 years wishing they were back at school, before one day waking up to find that they’ve become the adult by whom they were once so looked down upon and now instead, they are the ones doing the looking down on.

After yesterday’s discussion about the best way to tap into our young people’s potential, it was with a mixture of interest and anticipation that I entered year 10 sex education class this morning.

A discussion with another teacher prior to the class wasn’t very encouraging. She complained that the whole session she had been to last week talked to the folks about ‘when’ they were having a physical relationship rather than ‘if’. She said it did nothing to remind these impressionable young people that the timing of starting a physical relationship was their choice.

The session was scheduled to last for two hours, long even by this grown-up’s standards I was prepared for giggling and fidgeting as time wore on but I was pleasantly surprised.

Aside from being introduced to some previously unheard of devices, I learned something today. Despite what the media tries to tell us, your average teenager is no different to you as a teen. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, Ben said as much yesterday. However, to see this demonstrated today was refreshing.

An example of this came when a discussion started about the ethical dilemma of allowing abortions up to the 24th week of pregnancy. Whereas the practical part of the session elicited giggles and balloon impressions, silence descended when the health visitor told the class that some babies survive at 22 weeks if a mother goes into labour prematurely. It reminded me of a debating competition I was a part of when I was 13 or 14. Teenagers today are just as interested and aware of ethical issues as you and I were at their age.

I still remember my sex ed class when I was 14. My parents will be pleased to hear that I was very green Thankfully, the lady running today’s session seemed much more aware of the need to balance education about practical issues with an encouragement for individuals to do what was right for them. Unlike my sex ed teacher, she suggested that it was perfectly normal to ignore peer pressure

As the session came to an end and we were standing around waiting for the obligatory ‘end-of-lesson’ bell, I chatted with a couple of the girls. I reminisced briefly about being in year 10 and how I remembered that the minority of girls who were sexually active at that time were called very rude names (that I’m far too polite to write down ) “Yeah” said this girl, “they still are!” It seems little has changed in the last 17 years

Despite what the media would have you believe, our 21st century teenagers are not leaping into bed with each other faster than you can say ‘hormones’. They still have morals and whilst the official line is it’s not cool to talk to your parents, when asked who they’d turn to if they had a problem, mum and dad were mentioned, second only to friends.

Hello I thought I would use my first community post to talk about something very dear to my heart and something Eleanor and I were discussing recently. We often feel that we want to take on the world and affect a massive change. We look for volunteers and ideas from people in our immediate circle before trying to widen our reach looking for like-minded fellows.

It’s obviously a sensible idea. When you try to take over the world, you often look to those around you to help. But when we want to grow and develop we often look for fellow adults to help us along the way. I want to suggest another way.

Young people get a bad rap. Lazy, offensive, drinking, mardy layabouts; we often see the worst in them. I work with around 10,000 young people each year, ranging from the ages of 11 and 18. I get to see young people from all kinds of backgrounds and walks of life and I’m here to say that yes, young people can be lazy, that yes, they can be rude at times, yes they can get themselves into mischief when they shouldn’t, and yes, they can be mardy but weren’t you at their age?

But do you know something? Most of our young people today are; wait for it…..bored! They haven’t got much to do if we’re honest. The gap between the generations has grown and young people can now very easily distract themselves with many things we as old ones don’t agree with.

The very cool thing about young people, though, is that they have amazing ideas and are really rewarding to work with. They can come up with solutions to problems that us wrinklies could never get to – all you have to do is tease it out of them and give them an outlet. I’ve seen kids ,who usually struggle and are disruptive in a structured environment, flourish in a creative situation where they can have direct input into what’s going on.

So when you’re wanting to take over the world and you need help, look to young people and you’ll be surprised at what they can do.

Today feels like an historic day as I introduce our first ever community article. When offering advice on parenting, one of the first things people want to know is whether or not you have the necessary credentials to offer said advice. Unlike some who have taken courses on the subject but have never raised a child themselves, I can say that I have helped raise two children, a 21 year old male and an 18 year old female, and it’s this experience that I would like to share with you. I admit I have made my mistakes, but I believe that have learned by them. You may well find some books written by so called experts that may contradict what I am about to say, but I don’t care, it worked for me, it will hopefully work for you and at the very least, it gives you some ideas.

The Bundle Of Joy Arrives!

The birth of your first child is truly a miracle, and I like to think of every newborn as a fresh piece of clay, one whose future shape will depend largely on how you work it on the wheel of life. It’s a scary thought for many a new parent, and so it should be because the way we bring up that child not only shapes his or her life, but those who come in contact with the resulting adult. The first few years are very important as every child will need the gentlest of touches and all the loving care and nurturing you can give. The more time you devote in the early days the greater the bond and truer the form it will take.

There will be many times when the baby will cry and scream, but no good will come of it if you rant and rave back as the baby doesn’t understand a word you’re saying and the emotions you convey will only scare the child, exasperating the problem. You first have to find out what’s wrong. Is it overly moist, or are there other lumps present in the clay? If so, then a diaper change is in order. If it too dry and cracking it may be that a temperature check is called for, as something may be amiss. Not taking on the right shape or is the size of your work of art not what it should be? Then perhaps some food is the answer. If all seems to be in order then then perhaps all that is needed is a bit of loving attention.

One important point to make for all first time parents is that you are not alone. There are many people out there who can help you so do not be afraid to ask for that help.

A Toddler Emerges.

So you’ve given it all the loving attention that you think is required and you place it in the kiln. After a while you take him or her out and you now have a little toddler running around getting into all sorts of mischief. Patience is definitely a virtue now. The child will be looking for all sorts of attention; the trick is to reward good behavior and to ignore or give a firm NO to bad behavior. This can be tricky sometimes because if ignoring does not get the reaction he’s looking for he will recommit the crime.

Remember as frustrating as it can be anger on your part is not the answer, unless it’s controlled anger. The first is a useless emotion that has clouded your thought process leading to improper action on your part. Controlled Anger occurs when you can step back for a moment, take a couple of breaths, count to ten and assess the situation. Perhaps no anger at all is needed and you merely have to take the child aside and explain the consequences of what he is doing.

Controlled Anger is to be used sparingly and in dire situations and done on the spot. No point saying “wait till your dad gets home” as this is totally useless because children have a short attention span at that age and they will have forgotten what they’ve done and won’t know what they are being told off for. The action required may be raising the voice or a smack. Once again sparingly because those parents who do this at the drop of the hat, smacking their child every time it makes a mistake, will cause the child to become immune to this sort of teaching practice.

The Teen Years

“What have I got myself in for?!” is the reaction of many parents once their child has reached the dreaded teens. If you have taught the child in the early years, when you were able to shape and mold them, the teen years can be a whole lot easier. If you have waited until now to instruct a child you will have a hard time ahead of you. All I can say is good luck! Just remember, whatever the pain and sacrifice you have to go through, it will all be worth it.
