I have a dream. Now where have you heard that before?!

by El

Give A Brick UK Charity 1121744I have a dream for this place. A vision of what it could be. The things it could do and individual lives it could bring a ray of sunshine to.

It started as an idea. A spark of an idea really. How to make a difference to a child and her mother in one small corner of West Wales. How to bring connection and meaning and existence into the day of one lonely grandparent. How to empower one fourteen year old boy to believe that he can do it. That there is another way.

One person on their own is powerless. Well, that’s probably not strictly true. I think about individuals who totally rocked our world. Martin Luther King. Adolph Hitler. Jesus.

Some use their individuality for good whilst in others it finds an evil expression. But good or evil, these individuals made a difference to our history.

But. They didn’t do it alone. They had their thing and went with it. Inspiring and empowering others to join them and make a difference. To change the world.

And that’s what I want for this place. I want us, you and me, to change the world. Together. One brick at a time. One life at a time.

But here’s the thing. Right now, people who Give A Brick (£1) generally fall into two overlapping categories. Either they Give A Brick because they’re connected with our first project (they live in the area or are related to someone who lives in the area) or they Give A Brick because they know me or a member of my family.

That’s basically where it’s at. I’m not being big-headed or thinking too highly of myself. I hear it every time I ask the question on a Friday. It’s a relationship thing. I love talking to people and we connect and they want to help so they Give A Brick.

And that’s lovely and kind and all and I appreciate it but I don’t need the affirmation (well actually, on a day when I’m feeling low I love the affirmation but that’s not the point!) Give A Brick isn’t about me. I’m too small to carry this vision and dream on my own. Maybe if I were an A-lister with a huge fan base, just being me waving the Give A Brick flag would be enough. I don’t know.

But that’s not what I want for this place. I want people to get involved and Give A Brick and tell their friends about the charity. But I want them to tell the stories of the lives that Give A Brick is making a difference to.

I see Give A Brick community facilities in every town in the UK.

I see you and me, empowering people to smile at strangers and delighting in the smile that stranger returns.

I see this place here on the web as being a community on-line where people can get advice but also engage in great, real, honest conversation.

I see Facebook applications and apps for the iPhone with the Give A Brick logo splashed all over the front, being passed from person to person as they share the vision and the love and the connection.

I see people connecting and living a life that is more joyful and more abundant as a result of Give A Brick.

And I see me, here, right now, wondering how on earth do we start?

Give A Brick is more than one person. It is a vision and a dream and it starts with you.

You can make that difference today.

How? Give.

Give love. Give time. Give money.

Give A Brick in whatever form feels right for you. Catch the vision. Share the dream. Be a bricklayer in this massive adventure of ours. But please, just give.

What about creating a fanpage on FB for GAB and also a cause page. I think I mentioned the cause before, not sure.

You do terrific work for GAB as well as helping and providing for people who are in need. There is no better cause than that.

Thanks Maria :)

Give A Brick has a fan page on Facebook. It’s here: http://www.facebook.com/GiveABrick You have mentioned causes before but I’m not sure I understand how it works. A year or so ago I set GAB up as a cause but because we’re not from the US, we couldn’t have a proper one. I emailed the people behind Causes at the time who said they were looking at rolling it out to other parts of the world, but hadn’t done so yet. If they’ve done that, then yes, we really need to be using that platform.

I just have this real burden that right now, people aren’t really buying into the vision. They’re buying into me. And that has got to change. I want to see GAB making a real difference across the UK and into the rest of the world and that can’t happen unless we start to make our dreams more vocal.

We’ve got a new design for the website coming soon so I’m really hoping that that will help. It’s forcing me to re-think the way things are organised around here. I need to get the pages tighter, more focussed. Start telling people’s stories. Showing people how their £1 is making a massive difference.

Then (I hope) people will really get it. Because I see it in people’s eyes when I talk to them face to face. They get it. They really do. I just need to get that across via this medium.

Hey El!

Gotcha! I see what you’re up to now.
What are your plans with the new redesign? Just curious what you have up your sleeve.

Hi Brandon :)
Thanks for stopping by.

The new design will be a neater, cleaner, more organised version of the best bits now. The Blue Princess in the header will be retiring and the blog posts, whilst they’ll still be here, will be less of a feature. I want to start telling the stories of the charity, better engaging with people, sharing the vision so they feel compelled to get involved. Trustees permitting (meeting on Sunday, cross your fingers and say some prayers for us) we’ll also be teaming up with Just Giving to make it quicker and easier to donate and do sponsored events for Give A Brick.

It’s going to be amazing and the site design comes thanks to Amanda from Violet Minded. She’s amazingly talented and she’s said yes to donating her skills to us. How cool is that?!

Can’t wait to show you around :)
