“The people who care are the ones who win” @GaryVee

Despite having been around this blogging bubble for only a short time, it will come as no surprise to you to learn that I had vaguely heard of the little book, Crush It! However, I’m generally not one for hype and given that the title contains its very own explanation mark, I have to admit I was cautious ;) However, I finally gave in and got myself a copy about a month ago. If it’s good enough for Dave “Website In A Weekend” Doolin, it’s good enough for El. Then Ben @6aliens told me it was rather good too so between the two of them, I was sold ;)

However, this blog post isn’t a book review or a sales pitch. Yes, I’m sure you’d really enjoy it but that isn’t the point today. What fascinated me was Chapter Nine. It’s called ‘The Best Marketing Strategy Ever’ and is the shortest chapter of any book I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a few ;) )

Given that love is what Give A Brick is about and my own need for love and affection, I decided to email the lovely Gary to check that I wasn’t misunderstanding his intent:

“Crush It arrived with my post man yesterday and after falling asleep reading it in the bath last night I’ve had to postpone finishing it until today. I got to chapter nine, the one you call the best marketing strategy ever. And the simple answer ‘care’. Is that right? I love people, talking to them, making them smile, having fun, it’s what Give A Brick is all about so it made me smile broadly to think that you were advocating caring as the best marketing strategy ever. However, given such simplicity and your invitation to email you if I had a question, I just wanted to clarify that I hadn’t missed the point entirely.”

Having been warned by a friend who knows about these things that GV can take months to get through his emails, I didn’t hold my breath whilst waiting for a reply. Imagine my delight then when he emailed back less than 48 hours later with this simple but exciting reply:

“U missed nothing! As the world goes more and more transparent the people that care are the ones who win….PERIOD! slow and steady and caring and always caring and always working and all that wins!”

Exciting eh? :) And yes, I did ask him if it was OK to quote him. He said yes and even sent a kiss: “Of course and don’t worry about linking back ;) mwa!” Call me soft hearted but it made me swoon ;)

This post has been simmering away ever since. However, it was a recent video I saw that reminded me that I still hadn’t hit publish. In it, Gary reiterates what he said in four simple letters in his book: c-a-r-e. It seems this guy really does mean it when he says that caring, always caring, is the very best way to play this game. Great news for Give A Brick ;)

But do you agree? Do you care? Or are you sometimes guilty of pretending to care because you think you should? I know you know what the correct answer is but what do you really think? Let’s talk about it :)

    That’s so cool.

Hope you’re enjoying yourself. We miss you. People are getting quite out of control around WiaW.

You are SO on the money here. Caring is essential in all areas of life but is often missing from the business world (or is faked!). Genuine caring benefits everyone in so many ways, business included. People who genuinely care really stand out because it is missing so often these days.

Thanks for stopping by, Ali and contributing. Eleanor would normally try and respond but she is on holiday – although just docked from the ferry. You have a lovely picture of yourself on your website and it’s such a shame that the system has chosen such an odd avatar. Why not visit http://www.gravatar.com and associate your photo with your email address, then everyone will see?

Hmm. Something odd going on here – on your website when you comment back, you photo is appearing. This needs the likes Eleanor and her team to sort. I’ll stop making comments (other than you look much nicer on your website than ours!)

Thanks for stopping by and as I said on Twitter, glad you enjoyed it :)

Glad too that your gravatar is all sorted. I fear I’ve created a monster when I my dad gets in a twist over gravatar. Six months ago he’d not known what it was ;)

And you now look lovely here on our site! All Eleanor needs to do now is tell you how to use “Comment Luv” and you get a link back to your site, which deserves a read (and gets me further brownie points from Eleanor just because I know about that as well as Gravitar!)

Thanks for all the techie tips. Must admit to beiong something of a technical dinosaur. So thanks for helping me learn something new. Think the work you do here is awesome.

It’s a great book Eleanor, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

@6aliens lent me his personal copy even droping through my letter box!

How fantsastic that you got a reply so quickly! You’ve inspired me to write a post on caring!

It was a great book. Kind of Ben to lend it to you. Chapter 9 was my favourite though. Remind me when you publish your caring post and I’ll edit your comment to link to it ;) I look forward to reading it and delighted to be part of the inspiration process :)

Dear Eleanor, Well I am going to be the critic and say my thoughts. I allow others to be who they are and what they represent and great for them if they succeed. However, this concept of CARE : here is my view.
I have cared all my life, giving all I have including more than I should. Is there a limit? Because quite frankly I don’t see how anyone wins by Caring 100%. I have become so bitter where caring is concerned because people have judged, betrayed, lied, sucked me in to believing things that would otherwise not bother me. Therefore, to CARE anymore is the big question. Being genuine on the other hand has its perks and defects. If you so boldly go the extra mile for anyone is it for profit, their benefit and how do you win in all this? I ask your friend, GaryVee, which I know of, do you consider caring a tool to make your money or are you really caring about others and their importance? You can post this comment if you want or not but you wanted to know how others felt. I love your site and you bring much to the internet blogging society and I know you have a heart. Thank you for allowing me to share.

      Hi Cathy,
Thanks for getting involved in the conversation :) I wouldn’t dream of not publishing your comment. As you so rightly said, I want to know what you think. And I can see your point. If someone is ‘caring’ just for the sole purpose of earning an extra buck, that’s not really caring at all is it?

The impression I get from GV is that he equates caring as in going the extra mile. He gives the example of his email. He answers it all himself. OK, that’s not the best example, but he does get a lot of email and he’s keen for everyone to get a personal reply. It shows he cares. (Or tuning it on it’s head, it shows he knows that if he shows he cares, he’ll get more customers.)

It sounds like you’ve had your caring nature taken advantage of. That’s pretty rubbish and it’s no wonder you’re not convinced of the merits of caring. I guess that for every person who cares, there will be others who use that to their own advantage but I have to believe that ultimately, caring wins. It’s like the cartoons I’d watch on TV as a kid. I loved the happy endings where the goody won and the baddy got his comeuppance. I know life isn’t a cartoon but surely we can try and make it as care full as possible?

      I haven’t got the answers to this one. Let’s talk :) x
