God Bless Technology

Did you hear about the vicar who blessed laptops and mobile phones? Given that it happened last Sunday it’s probably old news now but I’m mentioning it today because of something some one said this afternoon.

I had the pleasure of meeting with the trustees of Give A Brick today. There are some lovely folks involved with the charity. Each has enough stories to keep me in blog posts for quite some time but we’ll save that for another day ;)

Back to today, we had a great meeting. They loved hearing about Twitter and the positive feedback we’ve had since adding Paypal as a giving option. Better than that, within the hour we were done. Given my poor attention span, I’m not one for long meetings ;) The chairman closed in prayer and as he’s talking to God, he asked God to bless the technology we’re using.

And that reminded me of what I read last week. The service was a 21st century revision of a centuries old tradition known as plow Sunday. Years ago they would ask God to bless the tools of their trade, namely ploughs and other farming implements.

Being that the church holding the service was in the centre of London, there isn’t much call today for farming tools on a daily basis. What are the tools of today’s trades? For many, the answer is computers and mobile phones, hence the revision.

I’ve been pondering this since last week. A large part of me was delighted that the church was moving with the times and striving to be relevant and accessible to a generation who largely see church as oppressive, boring and unnecessary. If I’m honest though, I also wondered if it might be a bit silly to ask God to bless an inanimate object.

For me, the jury’s still out so it’s over to you. What do you think?

If you enjoyed this post, please Give A Brick. It’ll only cost a quid ;)

No contest in my mind. I’m sure it’s not the blessing of the tools that matters. If it wasn’t relevant to the ploughs, it would equally not be relevant to the new technology alternatives. But in blessing the ploughs, what the church was doing was recognising the importance of work to the individual and that is as relevant today as it was then. Tools can be used for good or ill in the hands of those who use them. So in blessing the mobile ‘phones and computers, what they were really doing was acknowledging and blessing the person who uses them and asking that they use them for good.

Very eloquently put doc ;) So if Jesus was around today, do you think he’d do Twitter? I wonder what his user name would be?

Speaking of technology, to get your photo showing up, you need to go to http://www.gravatar.com I don’t understand why but ever since I registered there and uploaded my profile pic, it works all over the place. Do you have your mini-photo on your machine or do I need to email it to you?

I’m with Dr Egg.

The world at large could use more blessings.

Gravatars work by querying a central database (gravatar.com) with your email address, then uploading the photo from that database to display wherever. Brilliant concept. About an afternoon’s programming work to prototype. Wish I’d thought of it. :)

Hi Dave,
Thanks for stopping by and for explaining about the gravatar. As you can see, Dr Egg got his sorted last night (although I did get a whispered phone call at an unsociable hour so he could check the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com ;) )

So we have two-nil in favour of blessing technology. Unanimous so far then ;) I’m just delighted to see the church moving with the times and trying to be relevant. Very encouraging.
