How to Write When You’re So Excited You Can’t!

After yesterday’s official launch of ‘Give A Brick – the community‘ (for want of a better name for it ;) ) I’m now so excited by the support and encouragement we’ve had, I can’t find a single thing to write about! That’ll teach me to say that ideas just pop into my head ;) Are you stuck with a deadline to meet and nothing to write about? Read my top 5 tips for how to write when you’re so excited you can’t, and let me know if they help.

1. Check your ‘post list’

You know the times when you have so many ideas and not enough places to put them? Do you write them down for a rainy day? If not, this is definitely something you need to start doing. Everyone has their unique way of doing this, be it a text message, note on your mobile or the good old fashioned pen and paper. However you do it, just do it! Even if it’s just a scrap of an idea, write it down! You’ll be amazed how those ideas can bloom into fully fledged pieces given a little time and space inside your amazing brain.

2. Search Google News

Whatever you write about, Google news will have something of interest to you. I make it a regular practice to type ‘charity’ into Google News and doing so has resulted in no less than four separate posts (and we’ve been adding regular content here for less than a month!) If your blog is geared toward technology news or following celebrities, this advice will be old hat to you. However, just reading about the happenings in your world can spark an amazing variety of ideas.

3. Read your comments

Have a look back at what your readers have been talking to you about. Have they asked a question that would merit more than a two sentence answer? What’s been the hot topic for you this week? Maybe your visitors have been enjoying a heated exchange? You could write a piece looking at the pros and cons of both sides before offering your opinion.

4. Visit some of your fellow writers

There’s nothing like reading to make you think. One great way to get some ideas for what to write about is to see what your fellow bloggers are talking about. If you’re a good neighbour, you’ll have your favourites bookmarked or in your RSS reader for easy access but how about making some new friends? One of the joys of Stumble-Upon is you can pick your area of interest and go for a ramble (or in their words, a stumble ;) ) A top 10 list of your favourite stumbles would keep you going for one post ;)

5. Go for a walk

Step away from the screen, get some fresh air, engage with your family and live a little. Stop thinking about writing for a little while and just go and enjoy yourself. Even if this is your job that pays the bills (and lucky you if it is, I heard that even the top 10% of bloggers earn just $19K per year ;) ) it isn’t meant to be this draining. Remember why it is you write!

“A synonym is a word you use when you can’t spell the other one.” ~Baltasar Gracián

Pen and paper rule the day!

I write down every post idea I have whenever I have it. Over the last 2 months I’ve collected up about 75 ideas that are just waiting to be written.

You can pull ideas from anywhere if life. As soon as you have the idea – write it down. I’ve have 3 awesome ones just this morning.

BTW I’ve not had me confirmation email with my login in details for the community yet? Have I been vetted? :(

Hi Ben,
I agree, writing things down is a must. Truth be told, if I hadn’t written this post, I’d have gone back to my list for this one ;)

As for your log in details, I’ve had a look from this end and can see no reason why you’ve not had them. Certainly not been vetoed from here ;) To test whether your email from us is being blocked for some reason, I’ve click on the ‘lost password’ link on the log in page. As a result, you should find an email in your google mail account with new details.

Any problems, I can manually set you up a password but would rather it worked as it’s meant to for obvious reasons ;)

Thanks for letting me know :)

Great list to think about when I’m stuck for posts, Eleanor.

It hasn’t happened yet, but I will certainly keep this list in mind when it does happen (hopefully later rather than sooner).

I seem to be leaving post-it notes, email myself “ideas” and just jotting down post ideas all over the place. I should consolidate them, but then who has the time? I’m too busy actually writing :-)

Hi Karen :)
I wouldn’t worry too much about consolidating those post-it notes and emails. As long as you can access them, who cares if it’s not organised?

Out of interest, has having a series to follow made it is easier to keep the ideas flowing? And did you plan the order of your challenges before you started. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next month ;)

Hi Eleanor,

No, I didn’t really plan out the entire month of challenges. I had some ideas of what to talk about when, but it evolved over time.

I’m hoping to get inspired for my February articles :-)

Thanks,
Karen

Since I don’t usually draw inspiration from google news or other writers yet, figured I would give it a go. Found a couple of thing’s that inspired some idea’s and some other posts covering some other idea’s exactly the way I planned on covering them. That step can be used to shoot down idea’s also lol. Great post with advice that produces positive results.

These guys that write down all their ideas on paper. How do they keep all the pieces of paper? And know where they are? I’ve got lots of paper but finding any particular piece is a killer.

Hi Ralph, I have several notebooks but given that I have at least three of them, I am familiar with the problem you describe ;) Getting an iPhone for Christmas has revolutionalized my list writing (and retrieving!) abilities.

I usually use Evernote to organize notes I find, in it I created a notebook for “things to write about”. I use the title section to place the idea. Then when the time comes to write I’ll go back to it and use the built in word processor.

Hi Erica :)
Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to get involved. It’s lovely to meet you. I’m not familiar with Evernote. Is it software for the PC or web based? Sounds like a great tool though. I shall have to investigate.

You can find it here http://www.evernote.com/. It’s actually both web based and multi-platform, a really neat app.

Thanks Erica :)
I’ve just downloaded it onto my phone, looks nifty. I like that you can access notes from the web, seems like an easy way to transfer blog posts from phone to site for example.

I do something similar with the WordPress app but that doesn’t have the easy access to camera and camera roll so this definitely has some good uses.

Thank you again,
Eleanor

Great tips here. I don’t use Google enough for ideas, but I do jot down anything that comes to mind if I am out and about. I also have a list, sorted by topic, in my blogging spread sheet. ATM I have about two more weeks worth of post ideas slated to be written, then some in the list that have no date attached to them.

Thanks for sharing this…I am sure many will benefit from it.
