I need your help today. I love writing, I really do. I especially love it when the snippet of an idea finds it’s way between my ears and I get the opportunity to mull it over and watch it develop. Today however an idea of an unknown variety has come to the fore and I need some help with it.
The thought that’s been echoing round my head is to do with inspiration, muses and post frequency. In essence, I’m wondering if it might be better to continue the daily 1 minute motivator series but post these slightly longer pieces every other day?
We’ve also introduced the video series but I don’t consider that as part of the discussion because it’s dependent on the material of others. That will continue as long as folks provide awesome video clips
What do you think? There’s some wonderful material on here that gets hidden pretty swiftly owing to the frequent new content. For example, it feels like just a couple of days ago that we brought you posts like 5 Easy Ways to Live in the Moment, Dr Egg’s awesome Psychoneuroimmunology and who could forget Ben Lumley’s advice in If you want to take over the world, look to young people? And yet these are living somewhere on page four.
Would posting more thoughtful pieces slightly less frequently allow more opportunity for folks to read them?
Give A Brick is in your hands so let me know what you think. Thank you

Why not just have a separate page for the 1-minute motivators? You can still post there, but it’s separate and all in one place.
I know your frustration – I have a hard time catching up with some people’s articles if they post more than twice per day. It’s too easy for the good stuff to get pushed off the main page, never to be read or seen from again. You can also start a Related Posts section where you can list the 1-minute motivators. They are pretty timeless and can be read any time. I quite like the series, so don’t lose it in favour of flashier videos
Just my $0.2

Thanks Karen. I appreciate your input
I wasn’t going to ditch the 1 min series, just post other ones slightly less frequently. I guess part of my frustration is that I feel like the other posts don’t get enough time. And given that they take more time and brain cells to put together, I feel they need to get their value. This is especially true when it’s a community post. Folks like Ben, Ryan and Dr Egg have taken the time to put pieces together. These posts always get a great reception and I hate seeing them fall off the page
But your idea is spot on. The 1 min series could have it’s own page with a link in the nav bar too. I like your suggestion about including related posts too. I understand that’s easy to set up via a plugin
Why not have a ‘Popular Posts’ page in the sidebar as well/instead? That would allow you to recycle posts for more people to see them and you wouldn’t have to change what you were doing.
I don’t think it’d hurt you much to post less, but it’s just an alternative solution.

Another great idea (and probably quicker to implement in the short term while I work out the coding to only add selective teasers to front page
)
Thanks
No problem
Hope it helps you!

great ideas already given eleanor. not sure I could add to it other than to say I too have a hard time keeping up with reading all the post in all the blogs I visit. Especially when it’s like 2 or 3 a day or such. If your like me and visit frequently and I know others are then yes it’s tough to keep up. Some great suggestions given though from Karen and Heather

Thanks Lee. I appreciate your input. To be honest, the different posts sort of serve different audiences so I’m a bit torn. For example, until recently, the one minute motivator series got very few comments but based on traffic stats, I know they were popular. This suggests that they’re read by a different audience to those people who read and comment on the longer posts. Same with the videos. It’s still too soon to talk in terms of numbers but I imagine they cater to different people again?

Eleanor,
A great post and a question many bloggers must ask themselves on a regular basis. I certainly do anyway.
Why don’t you consider adding a Featured Post plugin. I think these plugins are supposed keep your chosen posts on the front page.

Paul

The great thing about posts is that they are only a click away from being brought back to the fore. I like Pauls idea of a plugin that keeps poular stuff at the top. You are doing a great job here Eleanor.

@ Paul and Roy,
) I guess I need to learn when to stop tinkering ; I’m just always on the look out to make things better. The featured posts plugin is another great idea.
Thank you both for your encouragement (again
Right now I have a slightly bigger problem. My modem crashed and while I was waiting for it to restart, I tidied my desk top. I refiled everything that needed refiling and recycled the stuff that needed recycling but now web pages are looking a bit weird. I made the mistake of emptying the recycle bin too so I’m a bit stuffed
Until I get it resolved, I won’t know what looks right and what doesn’t!
On the plus side, my desk top looks beautiful now
And now you’ve just been hit by tidy-mode-itis. This occurs when you finally get round to tidying, and do so a little too well. Side affects include but are not limited to getting rid of important things (documents, vouchers, etc), putting things away for safe keeping and forgetting where, and sending your partner into hiding until it’s over.
Don’t worry, it wears off when the task is completed and normally won’t take more than a day or two to get back on track. The epidemic is at hand, but thankfully, it’s not fatal
Have a nice day ^_^ (that just made mine, can you tell?)

Lol. Glad to have made you smile. If I wasn’t so sore from walking too fast I’d be pulling my hair out right now. I’ve just tried a system restore and now I can’t even open Mozilla! Writing this from my phone whilst practicing patience.
Wrote over 5000 words of an essay that’s due next week but not a single word of a blog post! I could do with getting online now
Aw, that’s slightly less fun now… Guess this sort of thing happens, but even so, very frustrating. Hope you get back on soon

All fixed
Appreciate your concern though. Very sweet
