The Quest of a Noble Hobbit – Dr Egg’s Blog

I’ve been on a quest!  It started well.  I found at least two of the likely on-line suspects were available via The Giving Machine.  Awesome, thought I, there should be no issues here and I might even be able to persuade a willing supplier to part with some readies for Give a Brick.  But when the hole you are working to is cut from solid granite, you do not want to have to mess with it, as mess is guaranteed and I wouldn’t want to mess with Mrs Egg by making a mess!

The problem is, for the second time over a number of years, our second ceramic hob has been smashed.  In truth, I seem to recall it has been in its current smashed state for about a year now but hey, you can’t rush these things.  The first time we had a breakage I was able to find the same model still available in our local store, which made the replacement a piece of cake.  This time, with the passage of years, the models have been “improved”, which in my case seems to mean, “bigger.”

I have a gap that is 555mm x 478mm, the so called aperture.  Google?  Helped a bit but in the end, only one thing for it, get in the car and head for town, complete with trusty tape measure.  Did I believe the published aperture sizes?  Nah!  Check yourself, thought I.  You can get some funny looks from shop-assistants when you start disassembling their carefully arranged displays and start wielding your trusty!

But the smallest width seems to be 480mm, which means shaving off 2mm of solid granite if I choose that one.  The nice lady in Comet did manage to find me a hob for £740 but it was out of stock.  Phew!  Mrs Egg might have insisted and I was hoping to get one for around £200 max because in truth, the hob is rarely used, sitting as it does alongside an Aga.

So my quest continues.  If you, gentle reader, knows how to help me,  the hobbit, do get in touch :)
