From what it says on their site, Twitter Karma had to remove the bulk unfollow because it went against Twitter's rules about mass unfollowing people. I imagine it will only be time before Twit Cleaner gets clobbered too.

As for Twitter and traffic, I think you're right. I imagine it's far more powerful to engage with people so that they enjoy what you do and feel compelled to re-tweet it on your behalf. Word of mouth much better advertising that doing it all yourself ;)

Yeah Twitter can be great for traffic but so can commenting and engaging readers so it's a balancing act in my mind.

I didn't realise that Twitter Karma had removed the bulk unfollow. Not been on it for a bit. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the tips. I've only just discovered the value of lists this week. Until now, I didn't know you could add a list to it's own column in Tweet Deck for example.

I also appreciate your advice on how best to work Twitter in relation to tweets to posts. I'm torn because on one hand you have James who seems to post every 10 mintues, 27/7 and has the traffic to show for his efforts. Then on the other hand, I read of Twitter suspending folks who post mainly only links.

I also like to keep Facebook in mind. I like to use Twitter to update FB directly but wouldn't do so if posting link after link after link because it clogs up the live feed on FB.

Glad you mentioned Twitter Karma. Did you know they've removed their 'bulk unfollow' button at Twitter's request? But agree, useful tool, even for newbies like me ;)

Something I've done to combat the over zealous posting of some tweeples is to utilize lists. I have 4 lists that I can include useful people into groups so I can just have tweets to look at.

As for me I try not to tweet my post updates to often. Generally I set up four scheduled tweets for each new post over a 48 hour period. After that a new posts comes out and I do the same for that. That way only my recent content is out there.

BTW Try Twitter Karma for easy unfollowing and following. Very quick and easy especially for mega Twitter superstars like me! :)

Hi Eric :)
So worthwhile but fairly time consuming then I guess. Your way certainly sounds like the ideal but realistically I'm not sure I'd fit it in. I might just rely on TwitCleaner, until Twitter bans its use ;)

Hey Eleanor,

It takes me roughly half an hour. As you can see I only have 100 followers. :)

Well, it does increase a lot of positive things as I eliminate anyone who is not on my list for any good.

Everyone has their own way of doing things and this is just what I've found to be useful. It's also kind of fun too! :)

Hi Eric,
That sounds like a great way to help ensure you get followers who are ready to engage with you. Thanks for the feedback :)

How long on average does it take you to go through them all? Have you always done it this way and if it's a recent change, have you seen a vast improvement in your Twitter experience?

Interesting. I myself pick one day of the week to manually go through my Twitter followers and decide which people I am going to follow and I have reasons for doing it this way.

It may not save much time but it sure does get the job done.

1. No actual profile picture, no follow. Doesn't get any more simple than that.
2. All they do is send out useless links to websites that don't interest me or talk about making money online NOW! Yeah, right. No follow.
3. If I just have a bad feeling about that particular person... No follow.

I spend time going through all of the followers I have each week and seeing what's going on. This way I can get a feel for who's really doing what.

Hi Ralph :)
Thanks for stopping by, it's great to see you. To say that you 'need' TwitCleaner would be a step too far but I would certainly recommend you giving it a try. This is particularly the case if you're bored of the constant drip feed of adverts. If you have less than 2000 followers, it's free too ;

Having unfollowed about 100 people who were just blasting spam at me, I noticed that my follower count dropped too. This is no bad thing in my book. What's the point in someone following you if they're not interested in communicating?

If you decide to try it, I'd be interested to hear what you think,
Eleanor
